Called the Amber Capital of the World, Gdańsk is the major shipping seaport and the most beautiful city along the Polish Baltic coast. It has everything a city of this scale needs: a fascinating history, great architecture and a friendly atmosphere!
Also known as Danzig due to its complex past with periods of Polish, German and self-rule, the city is part of the Tricity urban area together with the port city of Gdynia and the popular spa town, Sopot. It’s also a birthplace of the world-famous Solidarity movement, which helped to bring down the Communist rule in Poland initiating the end of the Cold War era.
Its charming buildings were rebuilt in a historical style after the near-complete destruction during the World War II. The colourful town houses of the Old Town can be admired by boat on the Motlawa River or enjoyed while strolling along the popular Long Street and Long Market.
While in Gdańsk, make sure you visit the 15th-century St Mary’s Church, the largest brick church in Europe, and you make a wish at the Neptune Fountain, the city’s patron. While in town, try the legendary local Goldwasser liqueur with 22 karat gold flakes!

A small but lovely city with lots and lots of history. Visited the Westerplatte, which was were WW11 began, a really atmospheric place, which brought home the horror of war. Solidarity museum and shipyard, was also a must see, another piece of history. We also visited Sopot, a beach area. This was a very popular place, lots of people around, very pretty. All in all I would certainly reccomend a vist to Gdansk.

Gdansk got tons of things to do, especially if you appreciate history, art, culture and architecture. The visit to malbork and the old town (especially the old town city hall) a well as the European solidarity centrum were among the best activities. The city got excellent beer as well as food regardless of you want international food such as burgers and pasta or local polish cuisines such as pierogi well as more museums and sight seeing than you can do in a week,you could easily stay here two a weeks without seeing most of the city and what the areas near by have to offer. I wish we had two weeks here instead of one. If I have anything negative to say about the city it's mostly thet the public transport system is a bit confusing (download jakdojade!) but there are tons of options for transport as well as tight departures. Also the traffic can be a bit too much sometimes as the cars ok the big roads travel very quickly with little regard to traffic regulations and pedestrians.StaffanSweden - 10Scored 10

Such a clean and beautiful city. We only stayed and looked at the main old town area plus the shipyards. Spent 2.5 days exploring on foot. Very flat easy walking. Some lovely architecture and nice beaches at Sopot. Gdynia was very disappointing. Most buildings in the old town are amber jewellery shops, currency exchange, restaurants, or coffee shops (which are nothing special). There isn't much else unless you go to a generic shopping centre. There are places of interest, monuments, museum etc but overall a little disappointing. Nice old town to visite on a weekend. We strongly recommend that you also take a fast train to Sopot which is a lovely little sea town with a very large and beautiful bridge on the sea. Children will probably love to go on a pirate boat trip but do it when it is warm otherwise you will freeze. The Amber Museum in Gdansk is absolutely beautiful. Dont miss it. Food was quite ok. There are restaurang everywhere. People are very friendly.

There is not enough space to say all I want to here. I love Gdansk and everything about it, and if you haven't been there, then WHY ON EARTH NOT? Go there at once and DON'T just stick to the old town and Dluga street. These are really good, and I love them too (as I do everything). But there is so much more. Day trips galore, great parks, excellent walking, a huge variety of restaurants and cafes, the river, the many miles of wonderful smooth sandy beaches (and the water is NOT always so cold as you might think!) Gdansk old town for architecture and history. Gdansk Wrzeszcz for restaurants and cafes. Gdansk Oliwa for the fabulous Park Oliwskie. Sopot and Gdynia for additional fun! Getting around couldn't be easier with trams and buses galore. Using Google Maps to help you, you'll be able to get everywhere.
